In this course, we will explore the exciting intersection of architecture and optimization through the lens of metaheuristic and swarm-based algorithms. Students will delve into cutting-edge multi-objective multi-constraint optimization techniques that mimic natural processes, such as genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, and ant colony optimization, to solve complex design problems in architecture. By understanding how these algorithms can efficiently navigate the vast design space, students will learn to enhance creativity, efficiency, and sustainability in architectural projects.

Taught in conjunction with ARCH 672, this course focuses on the principles, performances, and integration of building systems, including, but not limited to structural, environmental, building envelope, lighting, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, communication, and horizontal and vertical conveyance systems. Attention is paid to life safety issues, accessibility, security, fire protection systems, and building codes.
I take the lead in the structural integration by reviewing the core structural systems and criteria in selecting a structural system in the design. Additionally, I advise student to properly choose a structural system, develop the selected system, and provide technical details for their specific architectural project that is developed simultaneously at the design studio.
This course covers the basic principles of architectural structures, including: the influence of geometric, sectional and material properties related to flexure and shear in beam and framed systems; vector mechanics with application to analysis of trusses, catenaries and arches; diagrammatic analysis of beams for bending moment, shear and deflection; as well as they study of structural framing systems for vertical and lateral loads.
The lead instructor of this course is Prof. Peter von Buelow, and since Fall 2023, I have had this opportunity to work closely with him to teach core structural concepts to architectural students.
